ENGL-122: Dr. Powers

Why I chose to be an English major.

- I chose to become an English major, mostly due to the fact that I could not be accepted into IUP’s Music Program. I chose English because I was shown how English can be exciting, fun, and rewarding from Dr. Marlen Harrison my first semester here. I want to bring that same excitement and thrill to the subject for high school students.

- I enjoy reading thrillers/mysteries. I love the books by Dan Brown (Angels & Demons.)

- I am a pretty laid back, chill person. I have an about me page on this blog if you would like to take a look at it.

Discuss the Power of Reading:

- My reading was “Theme for English B” by Langston Hughes. The power of reading and writing in this piece represents the culture of the time. Racism was very strong in America, and Langston was the only colored male in his entire class. In this piece of writing, he essentially pours out his feelings on paper. How although we are two different colors on the outside, we are still the same on the inside. We learn from each other, even though sometimes we don’t want to. The power of reading and writing let Langston Hughes portray the emotion that we all see, hear, and smell the same, and often times would like the same things.
